About Roummane

News clippings and information about food culture, food justice, food sustainability, food insecurity, and vulnerable livelihoods. This is also our food journey and experimentations with eating local food, cooking, culture fusion, green resistance, and path towards a sustainable existence- one step at a time.

Prelude

Roummane (رمان, rumman) is the Arabic word for pomegranate. Roummane symbolized love, fertility, and immortality in ancient Egypt and Phoenicia. Several decade old pomegranate, olive, and fig trees standing in the backyard of our home in a far away land across the atlantic and the mediterranean tell ancient stories of belonging, resistance, and immortality.

Food is subsistence
Food is survival
Food is passion
Food is pleasure
Food is nurturing
Food is healing
Food is science
Food is art
Food is our being
Food is a basic human right
Food is our history and future
Food is immortality

This world is full of food contradictions and a food revolution is brewing in people's conscience across the globe. Some live with hunger, others are stuffed, and still others are oppressed, forced to live through neo-colonialism while their land, natural resources, and livelihoods are being destroyed under their eyes and the world's watch. What are we doing about it?
